FA 1435 Introduction to Electronic Art and Design: Blog #3 - ANATOMY OF A SCENE

BALLS / SONY BRAVIA

1. Who is in the video?

The only living things in the video were a person dodging the bouncing balls and a frog hopping out of the gutter. The focus was around the colourful balls bouncing all over the city.

2. What is each person’s motivation in the video? (In other words, what does each character want?)

There is no motivation in the video.

3. How does the casting influence how you see the characters?

There was no casting, but the way the balls were presented and followed gave an upbeat and fantasy feeling to the scene.

4. How do costumes contribute to how you see the characters?

No characters, but the balls were brightly coloured, which also added to the happy fantasy effect.

Setting

Where is the video set?

The video is set in the downtown area of a city and its more suburban-like outskirts.

Why/how is this setting significant?

The setting is significant because the dull colours of the building let the bright colours stand out, and the surfaces of an urban setting allow for more interesting ball movements.

What stands out about the setting?

It is unusual that there are a plethora of bouncy balls spanning over the city

Camera Work

What kinds of shots were used in the video? (Long, wide, etc.) How did they affect the story?

Long shots, wide shots, close ups, focused, unfocused shots are seen in the video. They made the balls more interesting to view, since most people wouldn’t find watching over two minutes of bouncing balls too appealing.

What kind of camera angles was used?

All shots were straight and un-tilted (not in respect to the horizon or the landscape).

What point-of-view do the camera angles suggest? Is the camera acting as the eyes of a character or of the audience?

Since the balls are the main focal point and tend to follow the balls’ movements, I would have to say “character”.

How does the camera move? What effect does camera movement have on viewers?

The camera has a near equal amount of both still and pan shots. It allows the viewer to focus on the different movements of the balls.

5. Does the film use slow motion?

Yes, it does use slow motion.

How is the film edited? What effect does the editing have on you?

It was edited fairly well. The editing kept my interest during the entire run of the video.

Mood and Soundtrack

Is there music? How and when is it used? What is its effect? What mood does it create?

Yes, there is music. It is used as a soundtrack that runs for the entire length of the video. It creates an uplifted mood. The music doesn’t overwhelm; the vocals are settle and the music is modern.

Are there other sound effects?

There are no other sound effects.

Does the film make use of voiceovers? When? What is their effect?

No, no voice overs (or speech) were used in the video at all.

How else besides music is the mood created?

The bright colours give good vibes. Bouncy balls in themselves are happy because they are an object of youth.

Zoo Keeper

Characters
1.Kevin James is in the movie he is put there to be a comedic asset to the movie because as seen in other films he has been in he has played a comedic role. Other characters within this movie are the animals they bring the sense of a zoo to life.
2.Kevin James motivation in the movie is to get the girl but the way he has to get the girl is to listen to the zoo animals to learn how to be a more dominate figure. The animals’ motivation in the movie is to keep the actor Kevin James as their zoo keeper because as they say in the commercial “you are the best zoo keeper we’ve ever had.”
3.The casting of Kevin James influences my thought of the character by creating a more comedic vibe to the movie it also gives me the thought that the movie is supposed to be humorous in the end. The casting also creates a more familiar sense giving more comfort to the audience because they’ve seen the film before and if not the video also presents a very humorous sense to it.
4.The costumes in the video help create the sense that you are in a zoo it also helps provide the personality of the character in the video.
Setting
1.The video is mainly set in the zoo where it seems that the animals are training the man to get the girl in the end.
2.The setting is very significant because it creates a place that everyone has been before, and with that connection the video seems to create a warm and comforting feeling while watching the trailer.
3.What stands out about the setting that it is placed within a place where it seems to be a very childish. With the setting they also create a very home like feeling pulling in the audience with its bizarre story line and also with its very sad start to the video.
Camera Work
1.In the trailer they seem to use a couple of birds eye views to give you a sense of the area. But they mostly use close ups and mid shots to get the facial expressions of their human characters. But when it comes to the animal’s characters they seem to use a long shot to give a sense of what animal is talking, or what type of animals there are.
2.The trailer seems to use one angle where you are at the sense of being the character but other than that angle they use a basic angle or a birds eye view.
3The point of view of the camera suggests that there are a lot of talking sequences and also that the character is trying new things for the girl because they switch to who is talking at the moment and also zooms out when the characters are doing “action” sequences.
4.The camera likes to use a lot of pans because when another character is talking they would pan over from one to another creating a sense as if you were the one in the position of the main character. They also like to zoom out with in the action sequences to get a full frame of what is occurring in the situation and when there is something comedic they would zoom in a little bit to give a little more of a comedic push for the audience.
5.This film does not use slow motion.
6.The trailer is edited to show one comedic side to a very serious side of the movie by using cuts into the trailer. By doing this the editor of the trial creates a sense of a story and also provides the audience the fact that the movie is also a very comedic piece.
Mood and Soundtrack
1.The music in the trailer creates a very child friendly sense. The music also makes the trial seem a little more hysterical than the film really is.
2.There are no sound effects.
3.The voice over in the trailer creates the narration to the story and explains the plot of the character and also explains his needs within the film.
4.The mood is also created by the actions of the characters within the trailer. They also use very funny scenes to give the trailer a hysterical theme to the video.

Doritos Commercial

Characters
1. The characters in the commercial are two friends sharing a bag of Doritos and a friend that is way too addicted to them dressed as a Doritos Samurai.
2. The motivation of the Doritos Samurai is to get his bag of Doritos back. The other friends’ motives are to eat the Doritos and when one finds out the bag of Doritos was snuck away from there Doritos addicted friend to run away before they are killed or injured.
3. The casting of the three helps create a friendly sense with the two friends. And the Doritos addict helps connect to the audience because everyone knows someone who would fight you if you took away something that they really loved in life.
4. The costumes create a very funny sense when you see their friend coming out last minute dressed as a Doritos Samurai, with the other two characters the director creates the sense of the place that they are at which is a gym.
Setting
1.The video is set in a gym.
2.The setting creates a very familiar feeling because everyone has a sense of what a gym looks like even without really seeing a gym in real life but through a computer or watching TV.
3.What stands out is that the characters are eating junk food in a place where they are suppose to be doing stuff for fitness and the two are opposites of each other.
Camera Work
1.There were long shots (the two friends standing next each other) and also mid-shots (the showing of the Doritos Samurai.)
2.The angles were very simple to create a face to face shot with their viewers. They made it as if you were there as a third person who was next to be attacked.
3.The point of view is the views of the second friend who came into the camera to give a sense of danger for the first friend when he begins to panic. The camera view can also suggest that you are there as a third friend.
4.The camera stays still keeping view of the two friends’ actions then pans over once the Doritos addict shows up.
5.The slow motion that is used is when the Samurai is jumping in the air ready to attack the second friend. With this effect they try to create a sense of suspense for the viewer of the commercial.
6.The film is edited by keeping the piece very simple. But once there is a point of suspense giving us time to interpret what will happen next by leaving an opening for our own assumption by the end of the commercial.
Mood and Soundtrack
1.There is no music.
2.The sound effect used is a swift noise when the Doritos is thrown at the friend so give sense of what is occurring is the moment when he is hit with the Doritos.
3.There are no voiceovers.
4.The mood is also created by the sense of fear created by one of the friends to give its viewer a sense of danger and also give a comedic vibe to this commercial.

Costumes were casual and business type instead of outrageous.

FA 1435 Introduction to Electronic Art and Design: Blog #3 - ANATOMY OF A SCENE

Trailer: bad teacher

CHARACTERS AND CASTING
1.Who is in the video? Justin timberlake, Cameron Diaz, Jason Segel and others.
2.Cameron diaz was eager to find a new boyfriend and she sees Justin and wants to win a prize so Justin will also be more into her as well. Jason comes along and wants to be with her instead of Justin.
3. The video fluences me by showing that you dont need to be special just to impress another person, just be yourself!
4. The costumes look more modern day and not ancient clothing and seems like they're rying to be us in a normal school environment.

SETTING:
1. The video is set in some modern day school environment somewhere.
2. The setting makes the movie seem real and make sense, and it seemed to stand so it is realsistic.
3. The school environemnt and the home where they meet seem to stand out the most.

CAMERA WORK:
1. The movie showed a lot of close and long shots and lots of zooms as well. Once the camera got closer the person changed into a whole enitre other mood.
2. I think there were more front views then side views in the scene.
3. I think the audience because it shows us real life meaning and uses real characters to show their life.
4. Sometimes the camera moved closer towards the charcter so it changed their mood.
5. Yes it looked like slow motion in a lot of scenes, like when it showed Cameron Diaz like at the car wash.
6. I think it affects the viewer who is watching the film and rather or not they would like to see it again or not or see a second movie and so on.

SOUND TRACK:
1.Yes this movie does have music, it helps makes it more interesting . The music grabs the attention of the viewer and hopefully helps make people want to come and see it. It creates a mood of excitement for the movies, even if the music is suspenseful or sad, it gets attention from the viewer.
2.There didnt seem to have to much sound effects just all the music that played to open a scene to the next and to change te mood of it.
3.When a charcter is changing their mood the music stops. The music also changes to fit the voice of the actor, if its a louder voice the music seems to be more high pitched if its lower than its a slower beat.
4. I think the mood is created by the characters personality whether they're mean or not or what they say that goes along with the song or beat.

Commercial "Bridgestone Carma"
1.A guy driving a car and a beaver.
2.In the video the guy is driv ing and doesn't see the beaver so he swerves away from him so he doesnt hit him. Then the beaver sees the storm and the driver is heading towards the bridge when the beaver bites the tree down causing the guy to stop. In a sifferent way they both saved each others life.
3. I think the casting really doesnt show me anything maybe the beaver didnt want the guy to die so he saved his life or maybe he didn't wanna see the bridgestone tires get ruined.
4. The only costume there is the guy driving which hes wearing a dress up shirt and tie. It shows how he seems to be in a rush to his meeting.

SETTING:
1. The video is set in some forest with a bridge over water.
2. I think the setting is significant because it shows how much you need to be paying attention to the road in the first scene and how everything that happens has a side effect.
3. I think what stand outs is how the beaver notices everything and stands still when hes about to get hit.

CAMERA WORK:
1. In most of the scenes it was long shot away from the driver the only close ups were the animal and showing the drivers reaction.
2.The kind of camera angles that were used were long close and short.
3. I think it shows first person because it shows the beaver and the person driving. I think its acting as the eyes of a character becuase it shows their reactions to everything that happens.
4. The camera moves in and out during most of the scene it effects the audience by giving them a more better in depth look at the two charcaters.
5. No is there is no slow montions scenes.
6. The film is edited by showing if you save ones life that person will do the same for again in return.

MOOD AND SOUNDTRACK:
1. Yes theres music, it's used to show different emotions. There is a sad and suspenseful effect becuase he's about to get hit but then its a happy effect once he misses.
2. The sound effects used are the cars brakes, the tree falling, and the rain in the background over the bridge.
3. No this film doesnt use voiceovers it just shows the charcters doing a sign language type of thing towards each other.
4. I think the mood origianially is sad people think the beavers going to get hit, then it turns to happy once the car is away from the beaver. Then the mood is grateful towards the end becuase he stopped the driver from goinmg into the water. The mood affects us in many ways and whether or not we want to see this commercial.

FA 1435 Introduction to Electronic Art and Design: Blog #3 - ANATOMY OF A SCENE

Volkswagon Mini Darth Commercial

1. Who is in the video?

The main characters are a small boy, and later in the video the mother and father are shown.

2. What is each person’s motivation in the video? (In other words, what does each character want?)

The boy wants to be able to use the force like Darth Vader, and the parents want their child to have fun.

3. How does the casting influence how you see the characters?

The casting lets the viewer see the little boy as imaginative. The parents are seen as playful in a way, and they help fuel the child’s imagination.

4. How do costumes contribute to how you see the characters?

Other than the child in the Vader getup, there were no costumes. It was an average house hold setting with a child who had an active imagination. That same imagination “lead” to the dressing up as Darth Vader.

Setting

Where is the video set?

The video is set in the home of the typical American family living in the suburbs.

Why/how is this setting significant?

It allows the audience to connect with the actors on screen.

What stands out about the setting?

Nothing was unusual about the scene. The setting elements that stood out were objects that the boy tried to work the force on.

Camera Work

What kinds of shots were used in the video? (Long, wide, etc.) How did they affect the story?

Long shots, wide shots, and close ups are abundant. All shots that did not use the car or involve the kid and the car were all still shots, while the car shots were panned. This made the car seem much more interesting, and possibly gave a slight hint of foreshadowing that something more than nothing is going to happen when the kid threw up his hands.

What kind of camera angles was used?

Most angles used were pretty straight forward, with slight tilts every now and again, which helped show the size comparison of the small kid to his surroundings.

What point-of-view do the camera angles suggest? Is the camera acting as the eyes of a character or of the audience?

Answered in the previous question.

How does the camera move? What effect does camera movement have on viewers?

All shots that did not use the car or involve the kid and the car were all still shots, while the car shots were panned. This made the car seem much more interesting, and possibly gave a slight hint of foreshadowing that something more than nothing is going to happen when the kid threw up his hands.

5. Does the film use slow motion?

No, it does not use slow motion.

How is the film edited? What effect does the editing have on you?

The film is edited well. The clips were compiled in a way that I can understand that the boy is exploring his house rather than a random compiling of video.

Mood and Soundtrack

Is there music? How and when is it used? What is its effect? What mood does it create?

Yes, there is music. It is used throughout the entire video. It is the fairly recognizable music orchestrated for the Star Wars Series. It creates and air of power about the kid.

Are there other sound effects?

The car makes a sound when the father hits a button on the car remote.

Does the film make use of voiceovers? When? What is their effect?

No, no voice overs (or speech) were used in the video at all.

How else besides music is the mood created?

The kid’s reactions to the objects not moving when he attempts to generate some sort of power, his shocked reaction when the car makes a sound, the dad’s smirk as he’s holding the car remote.

The casting influences, makes me see the character as if the girls tired because she’s on a plane and she’s sleeping. The costume contributes to how I see the characters because the guy who’s focused on looks very formal because he’s on a plane and he’s traveling which makes it believable why he’s so formal. The guy who’s focused on for the majority of the time is trying to take a picture in his phone with a girl who’s sleeping, to impress his friend, by showing him the picture of the girl with him. The girl’s closing her eyes; she’s acting as if she’s sleeping to convince the audience that she’s actually sleeping, even though she’s not. The other guy is impressed by looking at the picture.

3. How does the casting influence how you see the characters?

The casting influences, makes me see the character as if the girls tired because she’s on a plane and she’s sleeping.
