FA 1435 Introduction to Electronic Art and Design: Blog #3 - ANATOMY OF A SCENE

Volkswagon Mini Darth Commercial

1. Who is in the video?

The main characters are a small boy, and later in the video the mother and father are shown.

2. What is each person’s motivation in the video? (In other words, what does each character want?)

The boy wants to be able to use the force like Darth Vader, and the parents want their child to have fun.

3. How does the casting influence how you see the characters?

The casting lets the viewer see the little boy as imaginative. The parents are seen as playful in a way, and they help fuel the child’s imagination.

4. How do costumes contribute to how you see the characters?

Other than the child in the Vader getup, there were no costumes. It was an average house hold setting with a child who had an active imagination. That same imagination “lead” to the dressing up as Darth Vader.

Setting

Where is the video set?

The video is set in the home of the typical American family living in the suburbs.

Why/how is this setting significant?

It allows the audience to connect with the actors on screen.

What stands out about the setting?

Nothing was unusual about the scene. The setting elements that stood out were objects that the boy tried to work the force on.

Camera Work

What kinds of shots were used in the video? (Long, wide, etc.) How did they affect the story?

Long shots, wide shots, and close ups are abundant. All shots that did not use the car or involve the kid and the car were all still shots, while the car shots were panned. This made the car seem much more interesting, and possibly gave a slight hint of foreshadowing that something more than nothing is going to happen when the kid threw up his hands.

What kind of camera angles was used?

Most angles used were pretty straight forward, with slight tilts every now and again, which helped show the size comparison of the small kid to his surroundings.

What point-of-view do the camera angles suggest? Is the camera acting as the eyes of a character or of the audience?

Answered in the previous question.

How does the camera move? What effect does camera movement have on viewers?

All shots that did not use the car or involve the kid and the car were all still shots, while the car shots were panned. This made the car seem much more interesting, and possibly gave a slight hint of foreshadowing that something more than nothing is going to happen when the kid threw up his hands.

5. Does the film use slow motion?

No, it does not use slow motion.

How is the film edited? What effect does the editing have on you?

The film is edited well. The clips were compiled in a way that I can understand that the boy is exploring his house rather than a random compiling of video.

Mood and Soundtrack

Is there music? How and when is it used? What is its effect? What mood does it create?

Yes, there is music. It is used throughout the entire video. It is the fairly recognizable music orchestrated for the Star Wars Series. It creates and air of power about the kid.

Are there other sound effects?

The car makes a sound when the father hits a button on the car remote.

Does the film make use of voiceovers? When? What is their effect?

No, no voice overs (or speech) were used in the video at all.

How else besides music is the mood created?

The kid’s reactions to the objects not moving when he attempts to generate some sort of power, his shocked reaction when the car makes a sound, the dad’s smirk as he’s holding the car remote.
