FA 1435 Introduction to Electronic Art and Design: Blog #2 - So Who Is In Control?

1. Morgan Spurlock probably had such a difficult time finding sponsers for his film because he was going to be dissecting the advertising industry. This could cause negative spotlight for the companies associated the film, and that is not something that a company would want. If the people Spurlock asked to to fund the project said yes, they would be signing up to fund something that could hurt their company.
2. Companies advetize in ways that make a person want to go out and get whatever it is that they are selling. They might advertize certain products with a spokes person to convince people to but it, like these jeans for women. Because Stacey London--a famous stylist--is showing how great these jeans are, women who want to be more stylish will want to buy the jeans. Companies will also do research on what people like and then try to advertize their product in a way that will catch peoples' attentions. This is much like what Lee was telling Frontline, "but they want to know in general what are they like, how do they feel, what's important to them?"Com[anies want to invest time into whar people like and don't like, and they try to merge those findings with their approach to make a sellable product.
3. The brands I enjoy and Identify with are mostly clothing stores. I don't do any major household shopping so the things I really spend my time shopping for are clothes. Clothing stores that I enjoy are Forever 21 and H&M. I really like these places because they have a style that I'm very much into. I would describe it as girly, fashionable, retro{ish} clothing. I also like this place because the clothes aren't exspensive and I can easily fit them into my budget. Being that I don't have a job and I get my money from my parents, that money goes a lot further when I shop at those places.
4. I think the answer is yes to both questions. "Cool hunters" do look for ways to make money off of kids, but kids indirectly and directly show them what they want by dressing a certain way or doing certain activities. Anyone selling a product wants to make sure it will actuall be sold. So they will find out what people want or how they feel about things they want or about things they already have using any method possible. One popular way to do this is through the internet. Websites like My Survey and Online Survey World are websites that pay people to answer questions about pproducts. Once they know what market they want to sell to (in this case teenagers), they begin to shape and mold their products in a way that makes teenagers want to buy it. Both groups have control but in different ways.
5. I don't think the "cool hunters" were really right. The girl they followed didn't have great moral -like her dacing wih those guys- so I wouldn't say she is your typicla average teen. I deffinitely don't act like the way she did. The marketers for MTV kind of had it right in the sense that they know how to attract me to their channel but they don't reflect what i'm like. Their tv shows like: Jerseyshore, The Real World, Teen Wolf and others are shows that I find entertaining and enjoy watching. But this isn't because I find them extremelty relateable. I mostly watch these shows because they are slightly ridiculous and the people/characters are completely different from me. MTV does a very good job of making me turn to their channel everytime I turn on my television but some of they things they play don't keep me from staying on the channel. If MTV were to reflect me, it would be more like Comedy Central, except it would be funny all of the time. I like watching things taht make me laugh, and sadly, there is nothing funny about the MTV show Teen Moms. I would really love to see the station be what it claims to be--music television. They get too caught up with shows that feature hooking up and making out instead of playing things with diversity. As more of a modest person, my ideal television show would feature things with more modesty.
6. Yes, just like everyone else I am malnupulated by brands. When I think of certain words or ideas, brands come up to. For example, when I think of family time I think of Olvie Garden, Hamburger Helper an the Wii. All of thes products feature the idea of family time and taking a break from other things to be with family. Naturally if I think of other words or even sounds other products will appear too. Products with bold, never-chanaging logos; cathcy slogans and jingles will easily get stuck in a person's head.
7. Companies can go after teens by placing other famous teens or just other teens in their adds. If kids see other people from their age group doing something that looks relateable they might do it to. The product Acuvue contact lens have commercials featuring teenagers feeling confident about wearing contact lenses. They also have famous celebrities that are also young talking about the brand. In addition to that, the celebrities encourage the kids to try out for an Acuvue talent search to get kids to see the product and company in a fun eciting way.
8. The videos haven't led me to question how I exspress myself . There will never ba an end to people trying to get you to buy their products and trying to shape what you are supposed to find "cool" Everyone has bought something and then later thought "why did I buy this?" because they were persuaded in some way to leave the store with it. Whether it was because of an advertisement or a pushy clerk, they were persuaded to purchase that item. I don't have a problem with this because I'm WAY to cheap to just buy everything and anything without serious consideration as to if I need to get it. So adds don't have a humungous way on how they impact my life spanding wise. Howeer, they do make me think of certain products when I'm sick, or when my hair is acting crazy or i'm hungry for take out. It has made me question if i'm a "sheep" And if I am I don't really have a problem with it because I haven't been influenced to buy anything too stupid.
